How to Use Master Link Pliers

Master link pliers make chain maintenance straightforward once you understand the basic technique. For removal, locate your chain’s master link—it looks slightly different from regular links and may have directional arrows. Position the pliers so the tips grip the master link pins, then squeeze while pulling the chain ends in opposite directions. The link should separate with moderate pressure.

For installation, align the master link plates with the chain ends and push the pins through. Use your fingers to seat the link partially, then grip the chain on both sides of the master link and pull firmly while pedaling forward. You’ll feel the link click into place.

Always check that the master link is properly seated by examining it visually and testing with gentle tugging. Some master links are designed for single use, while others can be reused several times—check the manufacturer’s recommendations. Keep the pliers clean and the pivot point lubricated for smooth operation over years of use.
